Why Tallow?
Tallow has become quite the popular skin item, for good reason! There are a multitude of benefits to using tallow on our skin, due to the fatty acid structures of animal fats being almost identical to the natural sebum (oils) on our human skin! This means it soaks deeply beyond the surface into the dermal layers of the skin.
Tallow contains high amounts of vitamins, A, D, E, K needed to repair skin damage and aging. Its anti inflammatory properties make it ideal for sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis, and chronically dry, damaged or cracked skin. We use the pure suet tallow that collects near the kidneys, this fat contains the most nutrient density in the animals body. It is also a bi product of the meat industry that is underutilized.
Sheep tallow specifically contains more Lanolic Acid than other animals tallow. (also found in Lanolin from the wool) Lanolin Acid contains more antibacterial, protective properties and helps to balance the oil production in the skin barrier, making it suitable for acne prone individuals.
We hand render our tallow without any salts or solvents to "purify" it, this practice actually takes out a lot of beneficial nutrients from the tallow. If tallow is rendered properly, there is no need to use any other ingredients to purify it, and it should not have a meat like smell.
Tallow is a time tested, ancient remedy used in a multitude of ways by our ancestors. It wasn't until the industrial revolution that the cotton and soy industry created bi products that were introduced heavily into our modern diets and lifestyle. They were marketed as a cheaper and more hygienic alternative to animal fats. Before you knew it, everyone had Crisco on their shelves instead of animal fats and butter. This was a marketing gimmick as it vilified saturated fats as "the reason for heart disease". We have now learned that poly unsaturated fats like seed oils have oxidative instability, causing excessive inflammation in the body. This applies to internal and external tissues. Seed oils, (unless Organic, Cold pressed/ extra virgin) are heavily processed with solvents that make them rancid, completely lacking in nutrients, and incompatible with our skin barrier.
This is why we are so passionate about tallow, and sharing the truth about animal fats. Collectively, we are rewriting the story that has been carried for generations that seed oils are a "healthy alternative". We are reclaiming our traditional life ways and connection to the land!
We are so glad you have found us and joined the Tallow movement!
Love, Paloma & Quincy
